Big Garden Give
0Fellow Maple Valley Dwellers!
This weekend, Maple Valley residents have an opportunity to give back to local community gardens feeding those in need and get a jump start on their spring gardening season.
It’s all part of a new campaign, the Big Garden Give compost drive. There will be a local event on Sat. March 22 at the Maple Valley Fred Meyer on 26520 Maple Valley Black Diamond Rd SE, media advisory below.
Healthy soil for community gardens is essential for growing healthy, sustainable, local food in community gardens. Local gardens have a huge impact on our community.
Consider this:
• The Just Garden Project builds gardens for low income families in King County, creating an accessible source of fresh food
• Local gardens built by the Just Garden Project save low-income residents $650 a year on grocery bills
• Families benefiting from the gardens report that their eating habits drastically changed because they have more access to fresh vegetables
• Just Garden Project’s multifamily gardens feed an average 3,000 people per
week, decreasing their reliance on food banks
From March 15 through April 15, residents can take advantage of deep discounts on Cedar Grove compost, and kitchen food scrap containers and bio-bags. More information at: www.CompostDays.com.
MAPLE VALLEY – On Sat., March 22, Compost Days is kicking off the spring planting season with a Cedar Grove truckload sale and the Big Garden Give compost drive at the Maple Valley Fred Meyer. The campaign is a partnership by King County, Waste Management, Cedar Grove and Seattle Public Utilities with multiple goals: thank residents for diverting 350,000 tons of food and yard scraps from landfills by composting at curbside, donate free compost to more than 150 gardens that feed the hungry, and offer residents deep discounts on compost and kitchen containers. Participating in the Compost Days Big Garden Give compost drive is easy: the public can go online to www.compostdays.com from March 15-April 15 and donate a bag or take a pledge to compost. Cedar Grove will match each coupon used and each online bag donation with one bag of compost to a community garden benefiting low-income communities, ensuring that all 150 community gardens will be ready to grow this spring!
